EASTER IN POLLENÇA: A JOURNEY THROUGH TRADITION AND SPIRIT

Nestled in the north of Mallorca, the charming town of Pollença transforms during Holy Week into a place where ancient traditions and deep spirituality come alive. Semana Santa (Holy Week) here is not just a religious observance, it’s a profound cultural experience that invites both locals and visitors to reflect, remember, and rejoice.

As Easter approaches, the narrow cobbled streets of Pollença take on a solemn beauty. Palm leaves and purple drapes adorn balconies, and the soft sound of church bells echoes through the air. The entire town seems to hold its breath, preparing for the events to come.

Throughout the week, various cofradías organize processions that pass through the town’s historic center. They are moving displays of devotion, with participants dressed in traditional robes and hoods, carrying heavy religious floats depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ.

The most powerful of these is undoubtedly the Davallament, held on Good Friday evening. The event begins at the 365-step Calvari stairway, which leads to the small chapel perched above the town. As night falls, a solemn silence descends, broken only by the mournful sound of drums. From the chapel, a statue of Christ is carefully lowered, step by step, accompanied by torchlight and reverent silence. It’s a moment that sends chills down your spine.

It’s a time when the town reconnects with its past and embraces its traditions, not just as a formality, but as a living, breathing part of its identity.
